Katanya

Nrenna cast a privacy shield around the gardens.

The magic was unmistakable and Katanya would have recognised it anywhere. She had done the same for Ivloch on more occasions than her memory could recall.

“Why aren’t you calling your guards?” Reyn demanded.

Katanya felt the cold of the dagger still on her thigh as she willed her power to be ready. She couldn’t let anything happen to Reyn. The Guild and Brodanna needed him. His life was worth ten of her own.

Nrenna wandered forward, her blue gown dancing in the breeze. “So many questions, Brother dearest. Shouldn’t you be relieved I haven’t called them?”

“I don’t know how many times you need me to inform you I am not your brother, but I see we haven’t quite hit the quota just yet.”

Nrenna ignored her as she concentrated on Reyn. “It’s simply a term of endearment, Reyn. They’re still quite common, are they not?”

“When you’re dear to someone, yes.” Reyn glared, his dark eyes determined. “Whatever you’re planning, can you get it over with? If we’re to end up in a dungeon I’d quite like to get there and not have to suffer your company first.”

Nrenna circled him as a predator does their prey once more before moving to Katanya. The demon’s eyes examined every part of her body, but Katanya refused to flinch.

“I can see why you like her, Brother.” Her thin hand reached out, nails half as long as her fingers, and caressed Katanya’s cheek. A sharp pain, and blood appeared on one of Nrenna’s fingers. She smiled as her tongue curled out of her mouth and licked the red liquid.

Katanya refused to acknowledge the cut, but she saw Reyn stiffen next to her.

Nrenna licked her lips as her hands shot out to cup Katanya’s cheeks, a wild look in her eyes. The Unforgiven’s skin felt ice cold against her own. “Such power. So many things to come. Terrible things. Paths you never meant to step on. Loss and sadness. Surprise. Unlikely unions of the heart.” A small gasp escaped her violet lips. “Oh, my darling, you have no idea, do you?”

Katanya couldn’t help but feel a prick of curiosity. Her power could sense Nrenna’s, unusual and unknown in nature, but there; flowing through her enemy in such intensity.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Oh, but you will. A sacrifice is coming for you, girl. A moment that will define the woman you will be remembered as.” She lent forward and lapped at the remaining blood on Katanya’s cheek. “I expect you to remember this conversation, remember me as a choice comes your way. It’ll be very interesting to see which way you end up turning.”

Her hands released Katanya as she returned to Reyn.

“I told you once you would come to me willingly and help me. You still will, which is why I will keep your little antics this evening to myself. A gift to build trust between us, Brother, but I will expect something in return for the life of your little love.
